With its design reminiscent of Frank Gehry’s Disney Hall (another Forman/Strand Lighting project) this stunning facility is Los Angeles’ most recent performing arts educational facility. HMC Architects provided this overview:

“The LAUSD High School for the Visual and Performing Arts project will house 1,800 students in a 230,000 SF facility on a 9.78-acre site. By using the symbolic quality of the flytower as an icon for a theater and performing arts building, the school is given a strong visual presence within its urban environment setting. The project distinctively marks one end of the Grand Avenue Cultural Corridor, linking the local arts community with some of the city’s most notable cultural and architectural landmarks including the Colburn School of Music, Museum of Contemporary Art, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. The school addresses the context with unique and dynamic forms that celebrate the architectural distinction of the development along Grand Avenue.”

Working with theatre consultant Ed Kaye of JK Designs alongside the engineering team from Strand Lighting, Forman and Associates worked to create this stunning performance facility. The 900 seat theatre features state of the art dimming and lighting control technology to create a professional production space to complement the schools educational goals.

Associated with the LAUSD for more than 30 years the Forman team have been part of the design and specification of school performance facilities of all sizes and complexity. Today we are working to integrate the latest LED lighting technologies with conventional lighting to create new energy efficient school performance spaces.
